Seminar: Picture Making Machines (2012)
Dirty Work
Martin Golombek, Marie-Luise Greb

Two machines are working hard and never get to an end. One is drawing traces on a sheet of paper. Its counterpart constantly removes them.

The setup consists of two machines with similar moving features. Both can move to all directions and use an ultrasonic collision control. The drawing machine has a charcoal mounted on its rear end, the cleaning machine uses a round and slowly spinning eraser to clear the marks. Furthermore they are sensitive to light. The drawing machine starts when it brightens up and stops in the dark, that’s when the cleaning machine comes to life.
